It can also go both ways! I record band practice occasionally, and sometimes what you thought was sloppy as all hell actually sounded fine in a full band situation. It's also really useful for hearing what your bandmates sound like when you're not concentrating on playing your own instrument - I never realised just how tight our drummer's kicks were until I started taking footage! Can't say the same for my solos, though...

As an ex death metal drummer ( along the lines of Deicide/ Morbid Angel) of 22 years starting at age 29 ( late) and going until 52….lifestyle helps. Diet, no smoking, I don’t drink and I happen to be a pretty avid bicyclist. Those four things set the ground work for optimal performance. It is not only practice for LONGEVITY of maintaining these skills. It’s practice plus lifestyle. At least for me it worked.
